Courtesy Patrol Member
The purpose of the Courtesy Patrol is to provide information and assistance to users of the Foothills Trail while walking, cycling, rollerblading, running, or riding horseback on the trail.
The Courtesy Patrol was created in 2002 to encourge trail courtesy and provide trail information to users. Members also assist with special events such as the Foothills Dash, Daffodil Classic bike ride, the Rainier to Ruston Relay and Ultra, and the South Prairie Salmon Run. The patrol numbers about 100 members. Patrol hours and locations are optional.
Courtesy Patrol members meet on 2nd Saturdays of each month at High Cedars Golf Course, 149th St. Ct. E., Orting. No-host breakfast starts at 8 AM and the casual meeting at 9 AM with a free-for-all discussion about the past, present and future of the Courtesy Patrol. Guest speakers and training sessions are often included.

Rainier to Ruston Relay and Ultra

R2R Volunteers
The Rainier to Ruston Rail-Trail Relay and Ultra (R2R) is our major annual fundraiser and celebration of National Trails Day (1st Saturday of June). To learn more about this fun event, go to www.rainiertoruston.com. We are looking for volunteers to help with the following activities:
Advertising and Marketing volunteers to work with the Assistant Race Director, Eric Barnes, in any or all of the following areas.
- Collaborate with the Media Lab at Pacific Lutheran University to develop an advertising program, design t-shirts, brochures, posters, and flyers, and check them for accuracy.
- Submit materials and press releases for TV, radio, newspapers, magazines, and walking, running and hiking club newsletters.
- Recruit and coordinate volunteers in communities along the course to create National Trails Day events which complement the R2R.
Bell Stand crew volunteers to help set up and take down the bell stands and signage along the course on the day of the race.
Documentation volunteers to work with the documentation task leader, Bob Rowan, to take photos and video of the event and to put them on Flickr for viewing on the web. On-line sales of photos could be arranged and profits shared with the Coalition.
Exchange Monitors to record the arrival times of participants as they pass under the bell stands at each exchange.
Finish Area volunteer to organize the vendor and sponsor tent placements and arrange for music at the finish area.
First Aid Station volunteers to provide emergency 1st aid and radio communication along the course.
Sponsors volunteer to work with the Race Director and Assistant RD to solicit sponsors of the event.
T-Shirts volunteer to arrange the manufacture and delivery of event T-shirts for all participants and volunteers.
Parking and Course Monitors to direct traffic and parking at exchanges, guide participants on the course, and to sweep the course (on mountain bikes) after the last participant has passed.

Trail Crew Member
Trail crew volunteers attend work parties to open, improve, repair and maintain the Foothills Trail and occasionally other non-motorized trails in Pierce County. Work parties are generally held on Saturdays as announced by email.

Newsletter Editor
The mission of the quarterly Trail Line News is to communicate important policies, trends, and events relevant to members of the Foothills Rails-to-Trails Coalition. The duties of the editor include soliciting articles by email from the membership, editing draft content for clarity, spelling, punctuation and syntax, then working with our layout designer to finalize and check the newsletter. This work requires about 24 hours of time spent over about 15 days every three months.

We are looking for volunteers to help plan the 2010 convention which will be hosted in Tacoma, October 2010 by the Foothills Rails-to-Trails Coalition. This is our big chance to show off our trail and community to the rest of the state. Come help us plan it.
